Each month we have an emergency drill, preparing our children both physically and mentally to respond calmly and efficiently to any emergency. On Tuesday morning the entire school participated in a tornado drill. Upon hearing a clanging hand bell, the children followed their teachers to the back hallway, where there are no windows. There they sat, quietly with their backs against the wall, waiting for directions.
We then discussed what a drill was. One of our Green room friends said it was a “a practice”. Right on! We defined a tornado as a high wind and assured the children they would be safe in the basement.
Although we had set this date a week ago, as it turned out yesterday was National Tornado Awareness Day, so we joined schools around the country in this exercise.
